Hello there,
i'm goin' to speak about an over-discussed stuff: the awsome Ax's mixing and mastering and especially about the drum kicks.
As I said, the mixing is a very important part of Ax's tracks - and as a result every instrument is definited in his space. The kicks are always pumping and loud, especially on the 50-100hz, without being Boomy and I think the Axwell mix of Resurrection is one of the best results.
What I ask to all of you is: how do you improve the prominence of your kicks?
A very good mix is the first step, we all know it. But what kind of compressor do you usually use? And what is the ratio? What kind of eq? Do you usually use other stuff, during the mix on the channel strip or during the master, that can help to reach the goal?
Every information can be helpful for each other - except post like "Cut a kick from an Ax track you like, that's it" or "Vengeance VES2 - Bassdrum 0xx is the right one".
I'm not ASKING about the KIND of bassdrum. I'm DISCUSSING about the "loudness" of whatever kind of BD you wanna use.
Thanks in advance
Fab
P.s.: everything considering Ax's mixing and mastering in DAW. I'm conscious that an hardware compressor is not fairly comparable to a software emulator - but I'm not sure Ax's using somethig like an hardware SSL.

Parallel compression seems to be the term you're looking for. It's fairly simple but it really helps instruments cut through the mix.
If you're using kicks from samples packs like ves2 or similar you should use multiband compressors if you need to compress the kick. They already have been compressed, so a normal compressor doesn't have much room to work.

he uses a software version of the SSL. |
Is it you, Mike Calfan? You seems to be very disappointed. And how can you be that sure Ax's using "a software version of SSL" (that the rest of the world would name Waves SSL)? I'm sure he's using it, but it would be great to know how you know it, and if you have any other tip.

No I'm not calfan hahah, Michael actually asked Axel to have his name on the track so his track would get recognized (so i've heard) | fab2disco wrote: | And how can you be that sure Ax's using "a software version of SSL" (that the rest of the world would name Waves SSL)? A software version of SSL is Waves SSL Waves SSL is software and both Ax, Thomas Gold and most top producers use it. You can find a really similar plugin for only 99$ that SHM did use on greyhound.

Simple as that, Sausage Fattener, everybody is using it, put a top kick and a limiter on it, and work them out in a eq! Easy as that.

We are not here to make a good basical kick in during the production/writing of a track We are here trying to emulate the loudness of Ax's kicks in mixing/mastering process. In conventional way nothing is working as well as Ax's loud kicks.
